The NCC Netherlands’ GPU resources for Beyond Weather AI weather forecasting
The National Competence Centre (NCC) Netherlands presents this success story highlighting how high-performance computing (HPC), high-performance data analytics (HPDA), and artificial intelligence (AI) are enabling innovation in climate and weather forecasting.
NCC Netherlands serves as a national starting point for all parties interested in accessing HPC, HPDA, and AI resources. It supports knowledge sharing and facilitates access to compute infrastructure and expertise for researchers, SMEs, public institutions, and industry—both nationally and internationally.
A great example of this is Beyond Weather, a team on a mission to revolutionise weather forecasting and bring the future of climate insights to society. By combining cutting-edge AI with a deep understanding of meteorology, they are addressing some of the biggest challenges in AI weather prediction.
Tackling one of the toughest scientific challenges
One of the toughest scientific tasks remains forecasting weather patterns beyond 14 days. Achieving this requires a blend of immense computing power, vast datasets, and innovative AI algorithms. With support from NCC Netherlands—through access to expertise and high-end GPU resources—Beyond Weather began its journey into AI-based weather forecasting, taking crucial first steps toward unlocking new possibilities.
The emergence of foundational weather models—a new class of large-scale AI systems—is reshaping what’s possible in climate and weather modelling. These models make it feasible to combine diverse data sources such as satellite imagery, climate simulations, and real-time observations, pushing the boundaries of AI weather forecasting.
