SUMMARY:Harnessing High-Performance Computing for Industrial Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Are you an R&D driven tech company or start up? 🌟 Join us on June 10th for the webinar Driving National Growth: Harnessing High-Performance Computing for Industrial Innovation. \nDuring this webinar we will highlight the transformative power of High-Performance Computing (HPC). Explore practical use cases and strategies for leveraging supercomputing in R&D-driven tech companies. \n📅 Date: June 10\, 2024\n🕓 Time: 13:00 – 14:00 (Online) \n🎙️ We have great speakers lined up for you: \n1️⃣ Dr. Marijn Martens\, Synaptica\n2️⃣ Professor Gábor Závodszky – UvA & Dutch HPC Coalition\n3️⃣ Carlos Teijeiro Barjas\, EuroCC Netherlands \nMarijn Martens will talk about Predicting the functional consequence of ion channel mutations. Understanding the functional consequences of genetic mutations is key for early diagnosis and precision medicine. For only around 2% of potential pathogenic ion channel mutations\, the gain or loss of function effects are known and well quantified. Using these known mutations\, Synaptica has trained a machine learning model of all missense mutations in many of the disease-related ion channels. HPC now allows the simulation of molecular dynamics and 3D structures of the individual mutated protein sequences\, allowing for deep feature extraction. \nUsing this approach\, Synaptica provides predictions on gain or loss of function for ion channel mutations. Synaptica is currently running a clinical proof of concept clinical trial for a familial case of epilepsy. The results are aimed at medical use in clinical trial screening and treatment for channelopathies\, such as epilepsy\, muscle and heart diseases. \nGábor Závodszky will give insights about big simulations (road to exascale). During his talk he will also give examples of an extreme detailed simulation of a heart disease and a large-scale (330+ CPU core) cellular blood flow simulation. On top of that he will also review the energy consumption of these large simulations. And what can we predict how they will look like in an exascale execution and on new CPU architectures (with contribution from Eviden. To wrap up his talk\, he will share how this fits the national landscape and the forming Dutch HPC Coalition. \nCarlos Teijeiro Barjas will be your host and HPC Specialist from EuroCC Netherlands. \nGain valuable insights to elevate your organization’s innovation game. \nRegister now on linkedin

SUMMARY:Big Data Processing in Astronomy and Earth Observation: Synergies & Shared Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Do you engage with Big Data in your research in Astronomy or Earth Observation? Or do you want to learn about innovative projects in these domains with a strong data processing component? Then join this seminar\, organised by SURF and NSO\, bringing together the Astronomy and Earth Observation communities to discuss shared challenges and best practices. \nSign Up\nBig (data) challenges\nThe challenges related to Big Data are similar for Astronomy & Earth Observation research. Both domains deal with ever-growing amounts of data and increasing complexity of data. Hence\, mission and instrument teams are expected to deliver science/analysis-ready data products as it is not feasible anymore for the end-users to handle the pre-processing themselves. \nAnother effect of the increased data volumes and complexity is the migration of scientific workflows from desktops to Virtual Research Environments or HPC clusters. New AI algorithms and other optimizations are needed to plough through the huge datasets. And how is Big Data managed and shared in the context of the Open Science revolution? \nIn this seminar\, we bring together two research communities with similar challenges\, and learn how innovative Big Data projects in Astronomy and Earth Observation deal with: \n\ndata processing and analysis: how to get from raw data to science/analysis-ready data products and scientific workflows?\ndata storage and management: how to manage distributed and heterogenous datasets and storage systems following Open Science and FAIR principles?\nemerging technologies: how to use AI\, Quantum Computing\, HPC\, exascale computing to tackle Big Data challenges?\n\nInnovative projects and inspiring speakers\n\nGijs Nelemans (RU) – LISA\nJohn Swinbank (ASTRON) – Square Kilometer Array\nEdwin Valentijn (RUG) – Euclid NL Data Center\nAnthony Brown (UL) – Gaia\nSteven Bloemen (RU) – BlackGEM\nNatalie Danezi (SURF) – The National Research IT Infrastructure\nAd Stoffelen (KNMI) – EUMETSAT Satellite Application Facilities\nJochen Landgraf (SRON) – TROPOMI\nJaap Langemeijer (Deltares) – Global Water Watch\nPier Siebesma (TUD/KNMI) – Ruisdael Observatory\nMeiert Grootes (eScience center) – Remote Sensing Deployable Analysis Environment\n\nOrganisation Committee\n\nHaili Hu (SURF)\nRaymond Oonk (SURF)\nJolien Diekema (NSO)\nRaymond Sluiter (NSO)\n\nFor whom\nResearchers\, IT support and Project Managers that are active in Astronomy or Earth Observation.

SUMMARY:Your secrets are safe with us: Tooling for research with sensitive data
DESCRIPTION:Many areas of research deal with sensitive data that cannot be shared widely. They have to be protected due to privacy\, intellectual property\, or other reasons. In this event\, we will discuss several projects\, tools and techniques to work with sensitive data in research. \nIn the context of open science\, research data are increasingly shared for reuse. When working with sensitive data\, however\, such sharing is often hampered due to privacy\, intellectual property or other limitations due to the sensitive nature of the data. This limits the degree of reuse in research tremendously. More and more\, however\, solutions and strategies are being developed to circumvent these limitations. \n\n\nThe aim of this afternoon is to give an overview of current projects\, tools and techniques to work safely with sensitive data. The afternoon will consist of short presentations and demos\, with ample room for questions\, and drinks afterwards. \n\n\n\n\nProgramme Tuesday March 21\nChair: Annette Langedijk \n\n13:00-13:30 Doors open\n13:30-13:40: Welcome (Matthijs van Otegem\, Director University Library Utrecht)\nPresentations and demo’s:\n\n13:40-13:55 The Data Privacy Project (Dorien Huijser\, Utrecht University)\n13:55-14:20 Tools-to-Data (Joris van Zundert\, Huygens Institute)\n14:20-14:45 Federated learning (Esther Bron\, Erasmus Medical Center\, Health-RI)\n14:45-15:15 Break\n15:15-15:40 D3I – A platform for digital trace data donation (Laura van Boeschoten\, Utrecht University)\n15:40-16:05 Synthetic data (Erik-Jan van Kesteren\, Utrecht University\, ODISSEI SODA team)\n16:05-16:30 Overview of privacy-preserving techniques (Freek Dijkstra\, SURF)\n\n\n16:30-17:00: Closing with drinks\n\n\n\n\n\nFor whom\nThe event is intended for research data support staff and researchers with an interest in working with sensitive research data.
