SUMMARY:LUMI SmartSim Workshop
DESCRIPTION:You are welcome to join us in 1-day hands-on workshop “LUMI SmartSim”. Using machine learning (ML) within HPC applications offers the advantage that it can improve the overall efficiency of HPC workflows by allowing ML predictions to help guide or replace parts of simulations.  However\, there are challenges in coupling the two approaches as HPC applications are typically written in C\, C++ or Fortran and run on CPUs\, whereas ML frameworks are usually Python based and benefit from being run on GPUs. In this tutorial we will introduce SmartSim\, an open-source framework that has been developed to help address these challenges and allow researchers to easily adapt their traditional HPC workloads to include ML. This is done with a distributed orchestrator\, which allows data to be exchanged between the HPC application and the ML model. \nEvent Info\nDates: 31 March 2026\nTime: 10:30 – 16:00 CEST\nLocation: Room 2.03\, SURF Utrecht\, Kantoren Hoog Overborch (Hoog Catharijne)\, Moreelsepark 48\, 3511 EP Utrecht\nOrganizer: HPE\, LUMI User Support Team (LUST)\, SURF Utrecht \nTarget group\nLUMI users interested in integrating machine learning into existing HPC workflows. \nLearning outcomes\nIn the morning session\, we will consider how ML and HPC applications may be coupled together and then give an overview of SmartSim and show how it can interact with simulation data in HPC applications in order to integrate ML models. We will show real examples of how SmartSim has been used in different fields of research such as Computational Fluid Dynamics and Climate Modelling. We also explain how SmartSim can be integrated within an application and how to deploy the resulting workflow. \nThe afternoon session will take a more hands-on approach where attendees can run examples of hybrid scientific simulation/AI workflows using SmartSim.  Attendees will learn how to launch SmartSim leveraging the system’s native batch scheduler and job launcher and gain a practical understanding of the modifications required to adapt HPC applications to use ML. We will also provide examples where attendees can run real applications that utilise SmartSim. \nAgenda\n10:30 Overview of ML and HPC coupling and introduction to SmartSim\n11:30 Practical use of SmartSim\n12:00 Lunch\n13:00 Connecting to LUMI\n13:30 Hands on practical examples\n15:00 Open session: Discuss using SmartSim in user’s own applications or run more examples\n16:00 Finish \nRegistration\nDeadline: 23 March 2026\, at 23:59 CEST \nClick here to register for the workshop.  \nPlease register by the deadline to secure your place. Spaces are limited and available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Participation in the workshop is free of charge and includes coffee/tea/water and a few snacks during the days. Please be prepared to cover your own lunch costs. \nWe have 48 in-person seats and every participant will receive a quick confirmation on a first-come\, first-served basis so that they can arrange travel. \nAttendees are encouraged to bring their own applications to try with SmartSim in the afternoon session or be prepared consider how SmartSim might be used for their own workflows/applications. \nSmartsim is portable to many HPC systems and has been run on laptops and large clusters. The machine learning backend supports both Nvidia and AMD GPUs and CPU backends are provided for Apple (both Intel and Apple Silicon) and Linux (x86_64). On HPC systems the SmartSim infrastructure library can integrate with Slurm\, PBS and LSF.

SUMMARY:Harnessing High-Performance Computing for Industrial Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Are you an R&D driven tech company or start up? 🌟 Join us on June 10th for the webinar Driving National Growth: Harnessing High-Performance Computing for Industrial Innovation. \nDuring this webinar we will highlight the transformative power of High-Performance Computing (HPC). Explore practical use cases and strategies for leveraging supercomputing in R&D-driven tech companies. \n📅 Date: June 10\, 2024\n🕓 Time: 13:00 – 14:00 (Online) \n🎙️ We have great speakers lined up for you: \n1️⃣ Dr. Marijn Martens\, Synaptica\n2️⃣ Professor Gábor Závodszky – UvA & Dutch HPC Coalition\n3️⃣ Carlos Teijeiro Barjas\, EuroCC Netherlands \nMarijn Martens will talk about Predicting the functional consequence of ion channel mutations. Understanding the functional consequences of genetic mutations is key for early diagnosis and precision medicine. For only around 2% of potential pathogenic ion channel mutations\, the gain or loss of function effects are known and well quantified. Using these known mutations\, Synaptica has trained a machine learning model of all missense mutations in many of the disease-related ion channels. HPC now allows the simulation of molecular dynamics and 3D structures of the individual mutated protein sequences\, allowing for deep feature extraction. \nUsing this approach\, Synaptica provides predictions on gain or loss of function for ion channel mutations. Synaptica is currently running a clinical proof of concept clinical trial for a familial case of epilepsy. The results are aimed at medical use in clinical trial screening and treatment for channelopathies\, such as epilepsy\, muscle and heart diseases. \nGábor Závodszky will give insights about big simulations (road to exascale). During his talk he will also give examples of an extreme detailed simulation of a heart disease and a large-scale (330+ CPU core) cellular blood flow simulation. On top of that he will also review the energy consumption of these large simulations. And what can we predict how they will look like in an exascale execution and on new CPU architectures (with contribution from Eviden. To wrap up his talk\, he will share how this fits the national landscape and the forming Dutch HPC Coalition. \nCarlos Teijeiro Barjas will be your host and HPC Specialist from EuroCC Netherlands. \nGain valuable insights to elevate your organization’s innovation game. \nRegister now on linkedin

SUMMARY:LUMI: Hackathon - Optimizing for AMD GPUs
DESCRIPTION:The Hackathon is a way for you to get free help to optimize your software for the AMD GPUs available on LUMI-G! \nYou can apply if you are a researcher or a company located in either one of the LUMI consortium countries or a member of EuroHPC country. Ph.D. students and holders of postdoctoral fellowships are also eligible to apply. Up to six (6) projects will be selected for this hackathon. The selected projects will receive help from HPE and AMD staff of the HPE Center of Excellence for LUMI and from members of the LUMI User Support Team. The Hackathon will be on site at CSC in Espoo (close to Helsinki). The deadline for applications is February 24 2023. \nThere will be another hackathon in the second half of 2023. \nThe following sections give more detail on what to expect and describe how you can apply. In order to make sure we can properly support those who attend we are asking for some information on what you hope to achieve. \nWho can apply\nThis is an open call. Anyone who is a member of an organization eligible to receive an allocation for LUMI compute resources is also welcome to apply to this program. In brief\, this means that a research software developer affiliated with a research organization in the EuroHPC countries and/or countries part of the LUMI consortium can apply. A company\, which has its headquarters in such countries\, is also eligible. By partnering with European research groups and/or companies\, a non-European applicant can also participate\, but please note that the principal investigator of any projects that apply will need to be based in the EU or an associated country. Ph.D. students and holders of postdoctoral fellowships are also eligible to apply\, but we may ask for further letters of support in such cases. \nFor more information\, please see: \n\nLUMI General Terms of Use https://www.lumi-supercomputer.eu/lumi-general-terms-of-use_1-0/\nEuroHPC JU Access Policy https://eurohpc-ju.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2021-03/Decision%2006.2021%20-%20Access%20policy.pdf\n\nWhat we are looking for\nWe are looking for research groups and companies interested in making their scientific software utilize efficiently the new AMD GPU-compute architecture in LUMI\, in collaboration with LUMI experts. We are looking for proposals outlining a team effort of solving performance bottlenecks in existing software. The scope should be limited so that the task can be accomplished in one week with your team of two (2) to four (4) people. \nCollectively the team should know the application intimately. There will be intensive mentoring during this 5-day hands-on workshop. Mentors come from HPE’s Center of Excellence\, and the LUMI User Support Team and will help your team accomplish your team’s goal.  We expect that your software already compiles and runs on AMD GPUs\, preferably with a build system based on standard tools like Make or CMake. \nIt is an advantage if intended work is mainly in their own source code\, and not in external third-party libraries (for which they are not the main developers)\, as it may be difficult to interact quickly with third parties during the hackathon. \nWe are mainly looking for software with open source licenses\, or at least free academic use. We will consider commercially licensed software only in exceptional cases. \nHow to apply\nClosing date: 24 February 2023\, 17:00 CETHackathon period: 17-21 April 2023 \nWe will organise an accompanying course about profiling GPU programs the week before the hackathon. It will happen online on the 13 April from 9:00 until 17:00. Attendance from teams joining the hackathon is advised. \nPlease register here: https://ssl.eventilla.com/event/yWdEZ \nThe application form is relatively short and we ask for: contact information\, a short technical description of the software (programming languages\, libraries etc)\, a description of the intended work\, and a motivation for why a successful effort will useful for the end-users (scientists). \nTeams whose application successfully passes the selection process will need to register for the event to confirm participation within two weeks from notification of acceptance. The notification of acceptance will include information on how to register. \nHow we will assess your application\nAssessment process\nThe teams will be selected based on a scientific and technical review. The scientific review is performed by the LUMI consortium and/or external evaluators. The technical review is performed by the LUMI User Support Team and HPE/AMD Center of Excellence (“CoE”). We may ask for an interview to discuss your proposal (done remotely). In such case\, applicants will be provided with comments prior to the interview in order to prepare. The interview will only be focused on the technical feasibility and not on the scientific merit. \nAssessment criteria\nThe scientific assessment is mainly done with respect to the potential impact in the specific field of science where the software will be used. Relatively less importance will be paid to the scientific track record of the applicants. Furthermore\, the proposed software and/or implementation is evaluated relative to the state-of-the-art in the field\, and if a successful effort would fill a gap in the currently available software on LUMI. \n  \nThe technical assessment is mainly done with respect to the technical feasibility of porting the software to AMD GPUs and subsequently running on the LUMI supercomputer. These include both: 1) technical aspects of the software such as programming language\, the use of libraries and frameworks\, and the internal data structures and algorithms\, and 2) the practical aspects such the difficulty of achieving the goal during the hackathon and the team’s ability to participate on-site. In particular\, the software development track record of the applicant (or applicants)\, and the balance of skills in the final project team\, which will include staff from the HPE CoE and the LUMI User Support Team\, will be taken into account. Projected software speed-ups or preliminary benchmarks are helpful in the evaluation\, but are not required. \nVenue\nThe hackathon will be held at CSC – IT center for science in Espoo\, Finland on April 17-21. It will start around lunchtime on the 17th and end at lunchtime on the 21st to allow for travel. The region is served by Helsinki-Vantaan airport. It takes approximately 1h to reach CSC from the airport. We do not provide accommodation. \nContact details\nFor any other specific information\, please contact: \n\nLUMI User Support\nDetailed technical information about LUMI can be found in this blog post.
